CVE-2026-31431, dubbed “Copy Fail,” was disclosed publicly on 2026-04-29. CVSS 7.8. Local privilege escalation. The vulnerable code shipped in every mainline kernel between 2017 and 2026-04-01 — Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, Amazon Linux, SUSE, Fedora. A 732-byte Python script using only standard library modules gets root deterministically on every tested distribution and architecture. No race condition, no offset spraying, no exotic primitives. The exploit was reduced from research POC to copy-pasteable script by the Xint Code Research Team using AI-assisted analysis.
The bug, briefly
The vulnerability lives in the Linux kernel’s authenc cryptographic template, reachable via the AF_ALG socket interface combined with the splice() system call. A 2017 in-place optimization (commit 72548b093ee3) allowed page-cache pages to be placed into a writable destination scatterlist. Under the right call sequence, that lets an unprivileged user edit a setuid binary and become root. The upstream fix (mainline commit a664bf3d603d) reverts the optimization and copies the associated data directly. The kernel security team got the report on March 23, 2026; patches landed mainline April 1; CVE assigned April 22; public disclosure April 29.
The mitigation while you wait for your distro’s patched kernel is small: persistently disable the algif_aead kernel module:

What we did on the MindSparkStack VPS in 30 minutes
Hostinger sent the advisory to our inbox at 11:07 UTC. The fleet’s response (timestamps from operator/audit.log):
- 11:07 UTC — advisory arrives.
- ~07:25 UTC, before advisory — separately, the audit-loop just finished a 5-hour security pass; system was clean entering the day.
- 07:30 UTC — verified the CVE on NVD, Ubuntu’s USN tracker, openwall
oss-security, and CERT-EU before running anything. The Hostinger email had social-engineering signatures (urgency framing, generic “support team” attribution) so we cross-checked the technical content against authoritative sources before trusting it. - 07:30 UTC — applied the persistent blacklist at
/etc/modprobe.d/cve-2026-31431-copyfail.conf.modprobe algif_aeadnow fails with retcode 1 from/bin/false. Module remains unloaded. - 07:32 UTC — installed an hourly cron at
/opt/second-brain/bin/kernel-patch-watcher.shthat compares running kernel to installed kernel and pings Telegram when Ubuntu pushes the patchedlinux-image-generictonoble-security. Idempotent state file prevents alert spam. Reboot is the only manual step left.
End-to-end fix from inbox to verified mitigation: about 25 minutes, fully autonomous, no human on the keyboard. The audit log entry is commit 2ba4e05.
Why this hits AI infrastructure harder than it looks
The CVE itself is a kernel bug — not specifically about LLMs or AI agents. But the LLM-API supply chain has a property that makes this class of vulnerability more dangerous than it would have been five years ago: your prompts and responses are persisted somewhere outside your control by default.
OpenAI retains API request bodies for 30 days by default. Anthropic does the same unless you negotiate a zero-data-retention amendment. Most AI agent stacks shipping today route customer data through these endpoints with no proxy in between. That means a successful local-priv-esc on the agent host gives an attacker root on a box that has, in chronological order:
- Plaintext prompts in process memory and short-term logs (the local exposure everyone thinks about)
- API keys for OpenAI / Anthropic / Cohere / etc. in
.envfiles (medium exposure — ratable but rotatable) - The ability to request the entire 30-day prompt history back from the model provider using those keys, since that history is reachable by any holder of the API key (highest exposure — historically irreversible)
Step three is the part most teams have not modeled. A breach that would have been “rotate keys, restore from backup” in 2020 becomes “assume 30 days of regulated customer data has been exfiltrated” in 2026.
One specific class of damage a zero-retention proxy contains

Does VaultAgent fix CVE-2026-31431? No. It is a kernel bug; the kernel patch fixes it. Does it cap the damage if a Copy-Fail-shaped exploit hits a host running an AI agent that flows through VaultAgent? Yes — specifically, it removes step three above. There is no 30-day prompt history at the model provider for the attacker to retrieve, because the proxy does not write one. The attack surface stays bounded to the local box.
This is the narrow argument we make for VaultAgent: it does not stop kernel exploits and it does not replace SOC 2 controls. It contains one specific class of damage that the modern LLM supply chain otherwise leaves uncontained. The CVE-2026-31431 disclosure is a clean illustration of why that class matters.
If you run any Linux box with an LLM API key on it
- Apply the modprobe mitigation now if your distro has not pushed a patched kernel yet.
- Watch your distro’s security feed; reboot once the patched
linux-image-*lands. - Independently of this CVE, verify your model-provider retention settings. OpenAI’s “zero data retention” requires an explicit org-level toggle plus account approval. Anthropic’s requires a contract amendment.
- If your agents handle regulated data — PHI, PII, GL data, audit evidence, SOX records — kicking the prompts out of your own logs is not enough. The provider keeps them too unless you negotiated otherwise.
